Accelerating the energy transition
AWS helps energy and utility organization accelerate the energy transition through the deployment of cloud technologies that increase efficiency, optimize renewable energy development, manage distributed energy resources, and monitor emissions. Through strategic collaborations with energy and utility leaders such as Duke Energy and GE Vernova, AWS is enabling innovative grid solutions for the industry to better manage the increasing number of
renewable energy assets and growing complexity of the power grid. Partnerships such as the one with ExxonMobil are helping advance methane emissions monitoring through space-based satellites and data science.
Case Studies
Moving to AWS Can Help Lower Carbon Footprint
AWS is the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud offering, with millions of global users depending on it every day. To build a sustainable business for our customers and for the world we all share, we’re designing data centers that provide the efficient, resilient service our customers expect while minimizing our environmental footprint—and theirs.
Our scale allows us to achieve higher resource utilization and energy efficiency than the typical on-premises data center. A study released by Accenture and AWS estimates running optimized workloads on AWS’s infrastructure is up to 4.1 times more efficient than on-premises and can reduce workloads’ carbon footprint by up to 99%.
Amazon is building a sustainable business for you and the planet
At Amazon, we are committed to and invested in sustainability because it’s a win all around—it’s good for the planet, for business, for our customers, and for our communities. We co-founded The Climate Pledge, which is a commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040—10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement with the goal of building a cross-sector community of companies, organizations, individuals, and partners working together to address the climate crisis and solve the challenges of decarbonizing our economy.
Here are some of the way we are helping accelerate sustainability and the energy transition:
AWS enables sustainability solutions
Innovation is key to achieving sustainability goals—challenges such as decarbonization of operations to water conservation are addressed through technologies that drive sustainable transformation. AWS enables customers to build sustainability solutions ranging from carbon tracking to energy conservation to waste reduction, using AWS services to ingest, analyze, and manage sustainability data.
AWS Clean Energy Accelerator
Inaugurated in 2021, the Clean Energy Accelerator was AWS’s first accelerator program focused on fostering innovation and rapid growth of clean energy technology, which is needed to address the global climate crisis. Through two previous programs, the Clean Energy Accelerator has influenced over $207M in seed funding for clean energy and climate technology startups. In addition, 12 pilot projects have been initiated as a result of engagements fostered by the Clean Energy Accelerator.
Powering our operations with 100% renewable energy
Transitioning to renewable energy is one of the highest-impact ways to immediately lower emissions. Amazon is the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy, and as part of this work, we're proud that in 2023, we achieved our goal to match 100% of the electricity consumed across our operations with renewable energy—a commitment we've met seven years ahead of our original 2030 goal.
